Workforce development is an ongoing objective of the VATC, to ensure Auslan teaching staff continue to increase their competence and knowledge of teaching second language learners.
A series of workshops were delivered in partnership with La Trobe University and Monash University to Auslan program teachers around:
- communicative approach
- second language acquisition and teaching principles
- putting communicative teaching into practice
- Auslan linguistics
Senior staff also provide ongoing leadership support and share their skills through specialist joint projects and mentoring.
Certificate IV Training and Assessment
The Certificate IV in Training and Assessment is a nationally recognised qualification and is the mandatory entry-level qualification to teach in vocational education and training (VET).
deafConnectEd, Vicdeaf and Melbourne Polytechnic have worked together to deliver two pathways to this qualification:
In 2015, a program to upgrade training professionals who held the outdated Training and Assessment (TAA04) qualification was delivered. The TAE40110 upgrade course was offered to Auslan teachers, workplace trainers and assessors, and training advisors, to ensure that their qualification remains up to date with the current industry standards.
In May 2016, the full TAE 40110 course commenced and 25 students are currently participating in this program. This is a unique opportunity for participating in a course that is delivered completely in Auslan.
The TAE course provides valuable skills and knowledge required to deliver effective training sessions within a structured VET program, including:
- developing learning programs
- preparing and delivering training sessions
- supporting students to maximise learning
- evaluating and assessing students to ensure learning outcomes have been achieved
